benefits of making your own decorations
You love to make things all year long, right? I know I do! And certainly around the holiday season! This is the time to get creative and make easy diy Christmas decorations for your holiday celebrations!
Upcycling and repurposing are at the heart of what we do together here on the blog and on my YouTube channel. I also like to get a little crafty!
So turn on some Christmas carols and let’s gather some of the many diy Christmas projects and Christmas crafts we have made! You will find holiday decorating inspiration in each of these transformed home decor pieces!
diy ornaments
By far, one of the first diy Christmas projects I think about is handmade ornaments! There have been so many over the years. My mind is always dreaming of the next group of ornaments to make!
Here are several ideas to get you in the holiday spirit of making!
easy wood bead ornaments
Wooden beads are so easy to make into beaded ornaments!! The combination of different sizes of beads can make all the difference with these fun projects. I chose a simple icicle look to mine. You could also paint the wooden beads in any color to match your decor!

pinecone ornaments
Pinecones are another fave of mine. We have pine trees in our yard so this project is practically free. Grab some paint and create these lovely farmhouse-style pinecone ornaments! Children would love to get involved with this project.
Add different ribbons to create a whole new look. I love organza, silk and lately I’ve been loving double sided velvet ribbon in blue, gold and cream.

paper mache star ornaments
The star shape is iconic for Christmas decor, especially as a Christmas tree ornament! I made paper mache stars a couple of years ago. Paint them in gold, white, silver or blue for a festive look!
I changed out the gold string hanger for one made out of twine. You could also use ribbon of your choice. Depending on the look you are going for, yarn would be nice as a hanging loop too!

wool felt ornaments
Grab a wool coat from the thrift store and create these simple wool felt ornaments. I’ve created free downloadable patterns for you. All you need is a needle and thread, a cup of hot chocolate and a Christmas movie to make them!

watercolor paper ornaments
Have you made handmade paper ornaments before? I’ve elevated the traditional paper ornaments by using watercolor paper! You won’t believe how beautiful they look on this thicker paper. I used transfers for the designs and then cut them out in shapes to match the design.
You can also access my free printable library for more watercolor paper ornament designs. Use the cute woodland creatures Advent calendar designs for more paper ornaments to make at home!
Make a batch of these paper ornaments and use them as bows on your gifts! The receiver will love it!

painted ceramic ornaments
Head out to your local craft store like Michaels and grab some ceramic ornaments. Paint the ball ornaments in metallic paint for a high-end look without the cost. Add velvet ribbon to elevate the look even more!

decorative wreaths
Wreaths are the quintessential Christmas decoration, don’t you think? Having a wreath on your door says Welcome to your guests!
sparkly pinecones on a twig wreath
Have you heard of glass glitter? It is an elevated glitter like you have never seen! They look amazing on a twig wreath that we upcycled. The sparkly pinecones are stunning! By the way, I used rose pine cones for the wreath and they look just like roses!

thanks for being here!
I hope you are enjoying this project! Let me know if you have any questions. Or leave me a comment to tell me about your project and ideas!
thanks, Cindy 😀

magnolia wreath
What could be prettier than a handmade wreath for the front door? Greet your guests with a gorgeous magnolia and orange slice wreath that you made with your own two hands! Your family and friends will want one to add to their front porch decor!

pinecone wreath with acorns
Create a wreath with pinecones and acorns with this simple tutorial. Grab a hot glue gun and some glimmering paint and you have yourself a beautiful wreath!
Try adding other accents to this wreath with ribbons, greenery or small berries for a holiday touch!

festive garlands
Garlands are a must for Christmas decorations! Make your own with these ideas! Hang them on your mantel, over your doorways, even your bathroom mirror to add Christmas flair!
paper garland
I mentioned making paper ornaments earlier, so I just had to share diy paper garland too! Use the same technique and supplies like transfer and watercolor paper to create stunning paper garlands. Use them in a bedroom like I did on our faux fireplace we made from an old door or any room in your home!
This budget-friendly Christmas craft will add a cozy feel your whole family will enjoy!

dried orange garland
People have been drying orange slices for generations! Kids of all ages will enjoy making them and using them for all sorts of Christmas decorating like garlands, ornaments and even filling a bowl full of them in the kitchen!

more diy Christmas decor
Here are several more ideas to inspire you! Be sure to comment at the end of this post and tell me your favorite!
Christmas serving tray
Wooden serving trays can be found at most thrift stores. They can be pretty ugly but with some paint and a Christmasy transfer, you can turn them into a lovely serving tray for the holiday season!
Grab a couple of them to give as gifts this Christmas!

diy faux antique brass bells
Have you been drawn in by the gorgeous faux Christmas bells in all the stores recently? I have but I like to repurpose thrift store items so I looked for bells that needed a makeover. I turned an outdated bell wreath into all sorts of Christmas decorations.
I’ll be writing those posts soon, but in the meantime, you can watch how I transformed shiny turquoise bells into gorgeous faux antique bells on my YouTube channel.
box spring and button Christmas tree
If you really love to find new uses for old pieces, then you are going to love what I did with some rusty vintage boxsprings!
I turned them into boxspring Christmas trees using buttons, E6000 and some spray paint! If you can get your hands on some boxsprings, you have to make some for your home!

dropcloth Christmas trees
Fabric is one of my favorite mediums to use in diy projects. I had scraps leftover from so many upholstery furniture tutorials and I had to use them! I even used drop cloth to make these adorable holiday drop cloth Christmas trees! The fun air dried clay stars on the top are so cute!

Christmas wall art
Moody Christmas decor is all the rage right now so I had to jump on the bandwagon and create a piece of wall art. Santa on the rooftop framed in an oval frame has never looked better! The frame had been upcycled once before and I’m sure it will be again some day!
Speaking of wall art, using a thrift store frame to create simple Christmas wall art is easy! I used a small 8 x 10 picture frame that cost a couple of dollars, a thick piece of cardboard, paint and an adorable decoupage paper to create a sweet piece for our front porch. You are going to love this project!

diy advent calendar
What is the holiday season without a countdown to Christmas advent calendar? With free downloadable designs and some dropcloth fabric, you will be making one of these for every child you know!
I made one of these gorgeous Advent calendars for each of our children’s families in one afternoon. Seriously, it’s one of the cutest projects I’ve ever made. Plus I started a tradition for their families!

handmade sweater snowman
Upcycled sweaters make for great projects! Not just for wearing, you can use an old sweater to make the cutest snowman on the planet! That sounds extreme, I know, but once you see one of these snowmen, you will understand. Grab an old sweater and make one of these snowmen!

upcycled festive breadboard
Add a festive touch to your kitchen the easy way! A thrifted breadboard can be usefull as well as pretty. This tutorial will show you step by step how to upcycle a breadboard to use as well as decorate with!

tomato cage Christmas tree
Grab a tomato cage from your garden shed and put it to use during the winter months! You can make a diy tomato cage Christmas tree for your front porch or back patio for next to nothing!
Christmas decorating doesn’t have to me expensive! Get creative this holiday season and think outside of the box!

diy sweater Christmas stocking
While you are out thrift shopping, look through the sweaters for men and women and find a wool sweater with a winter design. You can make your own sweater Christmas stocking to hang on the fireplace mantel! Sweaters are often only $5-$7 making this an inexpensive way to get more stockings as your family grows!
