Have you shopped at your local Restore? This donation center is one of the best places to find home accessories, building materials, and of course used furniture. My hubby and I decided to spend an entire day visiting all of the Habitat for Humanity Restore locations in Delaware on a rainy Saturday. We want to share our adventure with you.

Before we start, let’s take a look at the important role Habitat Restores play in our communities and how Habitat’s work began.

Habitat’s mission and beginning

Millard Fuller had experienced business and financial success at a very young age. The success came at a price, creating problems he probably didn’t anticipate. His marriage suffered and this caused him to take a good look at his lifestyle and what he had placed importance on.

It was 1976 and Mr. Fuller decided to recommit to his Christian faith and he put it in action. His wife Linda jumped on board and they decided to sell their belongings and use the money for good in their community.

Millard and Linda become connected to another group helping people needing affordable housing. This group helped to build homes for those who needed it but the recipients were expected to help with the building process. This gave them a sense of ownership and pride in their home.

Restore Retail Store

That is how Habitat for Humanity started. In 1992, The Restore began to sell unused donated building supplies and other usable materials to build affordable homes for local families in need. Eventually, Restore retail stores started accepting other donations including:

  • large items such as used furniture and new furniture
  • household goods
  • home decor pieces
  • electronics in good condition
  • appliances that are in working order
  • building supplies like flooring, cabinetry

thanks for being here!

I hope you are enjoying this project! Let me know if you have any questions. Or leave me a comment to tell me about your project and ideas!

thanks, Cindy 😀

The Restore carries supplies to fix up your home like remixed paint in lots of colors and flooring like this speckled rubber flooring.

This is not a full list of items that Habitat for Humanity Restore accepts. I suggest you check your local Restore to see the quality items they will accept as donations. Our local Restore has a downloadable PDF that is a great reference. They also accept large donations through corporate partnerships including Home Depot (at the time of this writing.)

Habitat’s work worldwide helps provide affordable homeownership to thousands of families in need. If you support Habitat for Humanity, you can know that you are helping others!

gently-used furniture

Shopping at The Restore in your local community is a great way to support them as well as purchase home decor and furniture you need at a fraction of the retail price. As I mentioned before, you can find supplies to complete your next home DIY project like paint and paint brushes and furnishings for your new home.

Habitat Restore has a host of enthusiastic volunteers as well as great customer service. They even have a pickup service as part of their donation process of unwanted items. Contact your local Restore for details in your area or on the Restore Facebook page.

The Restore offers a whole new category of retail therapy for people like me and you. I encourage you to check out your local Restore to find unique home furnishings.

Of course, I am always on the lookout for furniture pieces. Especially pieces that do not require much furniture repair. Restore has many new items as well as gently-used items that do not need repair. The most these pieces will need is a good cleaning and possibly an update with new paint or refinishing the wood.

See the gorgeous linen-colored chair below? That beauty came home with me for only $20! That chair might get reupholstered some day but for now, it’s in great shape!

The rocking chairs look amazing on the front porch of this Restore. Can’t you just imagine a couple of them on your front porch?

I mostly paid attention to antique furniture that will look good in our home. The side by side secretary desk is similar to one I restored a couple of years ago.

And of course I had my eye on this adorable washstand! It was $30. Should I have brought it home with me to add to my collection? I gave another washstand a makeover that looked exactly like this one!

The little orange side table was only $15. I wish I had room for it in our home!

I’m still editing that video so in the meantime, look at the gorgeous rugs I found! The blue one was a little small for the room I need a rug in otherwise I would have bought it!

    1. Cindy Rust says:

Hi Barbara! Delaware is so small so we are probably neighbors 🤣

  2. We currently have 3 chairs including a brand armchair with ottoman plus 2 tables and 3 lamps that we’ve picked up at our Restore. The selection is awesome! Just a good cleanup is mostly all that’s needed. Win for the customers & win for their clients.

Sounds like you are a fan of the ReStore too! You have some great pieces!😊

  3. So many fabulous finds, Cindy! It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a Habitat store but your post definitely makes me realize I need to stop by and look for pieces that could be a staple in our home. It’s always fun to find something to refresh this time of year! Hugs, CoCo
