blue and gold Christmas tree
Do you change your color scheme for Christmas each year? I’ve been changing the way our tree is decorated since our adult children moved out of the house.Â
When our kids were young, they wanted the tree to be the same each year. It helped to establish a secure tradition for them.
I wanted to create a beautiful tree this holiday season using the many vintage ornaments I have been picking up while out thrift shopping.
I can hardly believe how many packages of gold Christmas ornaments I have found! It’s been fun shopping for vintage glass ornaments. So far I haven’t purchased any plastic ornaments except for those I used for our garden shed Christmas decor.
Let’s take a look at my mostly thrifted blue and gold vintage Christmas tree!

collecting vintage Christmas decor
Collecting vintage decor is fun but it can be a challenge to find the colors you are looking for. Gold Christmas decorations are easy to come buy but colors, not so much.
Keep an eye out while at thrift stores and antique stores throughout the year. You never know when you will find them!

Visit auctions year round as well as estate sales. Many people need to sell items when a loved one passes on. It’s wonderful to know that those treasured pieces will live on!
One of my daughters found a package of Martha Stewart blue glass ornaments for only $2. I was thrilled!
Because I only have a few blue ornaments to start my collection, I had to purchase some and get creative with ways to add the elegant blue I’m going for.

decorate the Christmas tree
Choose the tree you will be decorating this year. Set up your faux tree or purchase a live tree. The choice is yours!
gold glass ornaments
When I chose the color scheme and gathered my Christmas tree ornaments together, it was time to decorate our artificial Christmas tree. Our tree is the 7′ King Noble Fir with warm lights from King of Christmas.
I began decorating the green tree by adding ornaments in my primary color of gold, as this will form the base of my themed tree. Gold glass ornaments will create the vintage vibe I want while adding a touch of elegance to our living room.
Box by box, I added the vintage gold glass ornaments to the tree. The tree was so full when I finished! I also added the white ornaments I had on hand from previous years. They are neutral and will add to the full look I’m going for.

Next, I added the blue ornaments that I have collected and made recently. The Martha Stewart blue glass ornaments needed some help, so I tied a gold velvet ribbon to them. Then I hung them on the Christmas tree.
I mentioned earlier that I purchased some new vintage-inspired dark blue glass ornaments. The deep indigo color adds a beautiful charm to the Christmas tree. Each ornament has several textures, including shades of blue, handcrafted diamond shapes, and a metal topper hanger. The intricate designs on these glass ornaments is stunning!
This year I found some paper mache ornaments heavily discounted at my local Hobby Lobby. I bought all that I could since they were each only $1. You will see how I painted them in the YouTube video I have for you later in this post.
In some lighting, they look turquoise, but in real life, they look like a heathered blue. I used Rub n Buff in Antique Gold and they look amazing!

inexpensive blue accents
After seeing the blue ornaments I added to the Christmas tree, I realized I didn’t have as many as I thought I did!
So I grabbed some gorgeous double-sided velvet ribbon that I purchased for gift wrapping. I have three shades of blue velvet ribbon plus a cream-colored velvet ribbon.
I tied bows with 1″ wide deep blue and cream-colored ribbons, leaving long tails on each bow. Then I secured the bows on the tree to fill out the sparse areas on the Christms tree.
thanks for being here!

Adding blueberry picks would be an amazing addition to this look. After Christmas, I plan on looking for discounted items at thrift stores or retail stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels that I can add to my collection.
You can also add a touch of blue to the tree skirt. I used a matlesse bedspread with a white tablecloth overtop for the tree skirt this year. I tied the corners of the tablecloth using deep blue velvet ribbon.
You will also see that I added blue accents around the tree. On one side of the tree is a rattan Christmas tree decor piece with a blue velvet ribbon and an organ stool with blue toile fabric.
On the other side of the tree is a small washstand with a blue and silver dish filled with gold garland and velvet ribbons. You will also noticed stacked paper mache boxes painted in shades of blue.

create visual harmony on the tree
To ensure your tree looks balanced and color-coordinated, take a few steps back regularly to view it from across the room. This wider perspective helps you spot any gaps or color-heavy areas that need adjusting.
Each time I added more ornaments, whether they were gold, creamy white or blue, I stepped back and slightly squinted my eyes. Doing so helps you to see the areas out of balance.
Turning off the Christmas lights is a huge help too! They can be a distraction when you are placing the ornaments.

Christmas tree topper
This is the first year that I can remember I have not wanted a tree topper! I’m not sure what struck me about this year in particular but I didn’t think this tree needed a topper.
Let me know what you think of excluding a tree topper in the comments section! Do you always include a tree topper? Does the tree look lost without one?

Christmas color combination ideas
I thought it might be helpful to add some other decor options for your vintage-inspired Christmas tree. These ideas will help you to brainstorm more ideas for your holiday decor!
- Choose a color palette that coordinates with your home’s existing decor for a unique look all your own.
- Add ornaments made from mercury glass to any color scheme to create an instant vintage vibe.
- Throw in some red berries in a variety of shades. Bright red, cranberry red and barn red berries can be found at most stores. Look in the seasonal decor section of your favorite retailer!
- Add a touch of sparkle to any color scheme. It’s easy to add white glitter to almost any ornament. Glass glitter is especially festive!
- Neutrals and soft whites can be added to any color scheme. Using neutral colors will help to fill out the tree and can be used from year to year.
- Make handmade ornaments from wooden beads then paint them in whatever color you need for your tree!
- Ribbon can be found online or at your local craft store. Choose the color that coordinates with the look you want.
- Purchase DIY ceramic ornaments and paint them in the color of your choice.
- Upcycle an old wool garment to create neutral wool ornaments.

storing vintage ornaments
Preserving your vintage ornaments is important if you want to use these pieces in the coming years. Be careful handling these ornaments especially if they are real glass like mine! The vintage glass ornaments are made from very thin glass and have a sharp edge when they are broken.
When possible, store the glass ornaments in their original box. If those boxes are damaged or you do not have the original box, purchase storage containers made specifically for ornaments. That way you will have them for years to come!
You can also wipe down the ornaments each year before storing them away with the rest of your Christmas home decor. Simply use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away any dust and fingerprints.
