Equipment

  • fabric scissors
  • sewing machine
  • iron
  • paper plates & paper towels
  • dropcloth

Ingredients

  • hand made or store bought pillow covers
  • chalk paint
  • celery
  • brown craft paper

Instructions

  • Sew your own envelope-style pillow cover to fit your pillow size. Make the cover 2" smaller than the finished size of the pillow for a plump fit. (see blog post for instructions)
  • Optional: purchase a ready-made blank pillow cover to fit your pillows.
  • Cut the celery about 2" from the root end. Allow it to soak for about 1 hour so that it will open up a bit
  • Pour a small amount of chalk paint in your color choice on a paper plate.
  • Dab the cut end of the celery into the paint the offload some of the paint by dabbing it on the paper towel.
  • Find the approximate center of the pillow cover and stamp the first flower onto the fabric. Press firmly for good contact.
  • Lift the celery straight up and repeat to create a large flower like a Chrysanthemum.
  • Use green to create leaves on the outside edges of the flower by stamping with a section of the celery cut in half lengthwise creating a half-moon shape.
  • Allow the paint to dry completely (I put mine in the sunshine for about an hour)
  • Use a hot iron to heat set the painted pillow cover. Layer the painted pillow cover between two pieces of additional fabric. Put the hot iron on the additional fabric, hold it for about 30 seconds then lift it straight up. Move to the next area until complete.

Notes

Be sure to lay down a protective layer of brown paper like a grocery bag, to protect from bleed-through while stamping the pillow.
Choose other colors to create flowers for spring, summer, and fall.
This is an easy DIY project that your kids would love to do!
