So Many Pallet Wood Projects!
We are all familiar with pallet wood projects. One search on Pinterest with pallet in the search field will bring a slew of projects from wall treatments to wall gardens, coat storage to shoe storage and even a toy chest! I love to see how creative people can be with something like pallet wood!
I also love the movement across this county to repurpose, reuse and reclaim items instead of throwing things in the trash!
Stacks and Stacks of Pallets
Today I want to share with you a project my hubby makes with industrial pallet wood.
Typically, we see the standard type of pallets stacked up behind grocery stores that are used to stack cases of boxed goods for the store. You know, things like canned goods and bottled water.
Industrial Pallet Wood
The pallets I am referring to are used for heavy loads of construction items like windows, doors and other heavy building items
Our local lumbar store makes these pallets available and when my hubby found out that tid-bit of info, believe me, he jumped in on the deal!
Now the wood doesn’t come in the best of condition. They are nailed together with what seems like a ton of nails that need to be pulled out with quite a bit of effort.
He uses a crowbar and a small sledge hammer to remove them. Some of the wood is oak which makes the removal of the nails pretty difficult. But he pushes through and removes every last one. He loves salvaged and reclaimed wood as much as I do.
Building Farmtables
Once the pallets are disassembled, he stores the wood until he is ready to build a project. Farmtables are his favorite pieces to build. All the wood is reclaimed except for the 4″x4″ legs.
Although I don’t have photos of the process of building the tables, I can share some of the amazing details of the table and two benches.
One of these days I am going to get images of him working in his workshop!
The top of the table showcases the reclaimed pallet wood. You can really see the gorgeous grain of the the different types of wood.
Finishing Details
He sands the wood to a smooth surface but still keeps the industrial markings in the wood.
After staining the wood in a custom mix of Walnut and Early American Stain by Varathane, it gets four coats of General Finishes High Performance in Flat. This protects the wood but keeps the authenticity of the reclaimed wood.
Farmhouse White Milk Paint
The apron and the the legs were painted in Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Farmhouse White. Then I distressed and sealed it with the same top coat as the top of the farmtable.
Don’t you just love details like this button?? My hubby assembles the apron and legs with lag bolts for strength and durability and then covers those bolts with the wood buttons. They help to lend toward the farmhouse style we love here at Reinvented Delaware.
Seating for Six to Eight!
The two benches are built in the same way. They can seat up to three people per bench so seating for six is easy! Add two chairs at each end of the table and you have seating for eight!
My hubby enjoys building these custom tables and our clients love to gather their families around them.
