Antique Hutch Makeover

The last time we saw this little beauty, I was stripping the old paint off of it – about nine layers of paint!  That took some time and patience – the latter being a virtue I have been working on for almost 56 years!

The hutch was sanded down but that didn’t remove all of the green staining that had occurred from the original green paint.  Two of the layers of paint had been green so I decided to not battle the existing green stain on the wood and paint it green again.

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint has been my go-to paint lately and her line carries a couple of lovely greens.  The first layer is MMS Milk Paint in Boxwood.  It is a deep, rich and vintage feeling green that I just love.

Call me crazy, but I wanted the layered-paint-over-the-years look to the piece so I chose another, lighter shade of green in MMS Milk Paint called Lucketts Green.  I knew the two colors would work so nice together.

To achieve the layered look, I used a chunk of beeswax on the piece to create areas that the second color would not adhere to.  The first layer of Boxwood practically soaked into the the sanded finish of the piece and I knew that I would not get much chipping with that color.  The beeswax will prevent the second color of Lucketts Green from sticking.  I applied it to areas that would show wear and then also to random areas on the piece to simulate natural, random chipping.

After I used the beeswax, I applied the second color, Lucketts Green.  My Zibra angled paint brush applies a nice thin coat.  I love the Zibra paint brushes – I will have to post about them soon and let you know all about them!

Since I was covering a darker color, the Lucketts Green needed two coats.  Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint dries fairly quickly so by the time I was finished both sections with the first coat, the second coat was ready to be put on!

A light sanding using a worn down piece of sand paper was all it took to knock off the areas of paint that I had used the beeswax on!  The light sanding also gives a smooth finish to the surfaces.

The entire piece was sealed in Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil.  The hemp oil deepens and enriches the color beautifully.  Hemp oil is becoming one of my favorite ways to seal milk paint!

And here she is in all of her loveliness!  I say this about every piece we do, but really this one needs to live at my house!  Don’t worry though, she will be available at Wilderlove soon.  Or if you are local to Delaware and need it now, just let me know!

The piece is a 1930’s era kitchen hutch but I love to think outside of the box when using furniture in a home.  Can’t you see this piece in a bathroom as linen storage?  One of my daughter’s even thought how cute it would be in a bedroom for cute shoe storage!  Put a large basket underneath for additional storage goodness!

The original top of the bottom section was in really bad shape so my hubby replaced it with a new piece.  He stained it in a dark walnut and it got a High Performance Top Coat in Flat to protect it.

You might have noticed in the first reveal image that the door was open just a tad.  Hubby also added this little wooden knob that turns and holds the door closed.

Did I mention the adorable, original glass knobs??  Just a bit of furniture jewelry!

Didn’t the beeswax do a great job as a paint resist?  The darker Boxwood Green just peaks through enough!

I forgot to mention, the interior of the upper section of the kitchen hutch was painted in Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Ironstone.  It is one of my favorite whites!  The glass in the door was also missing so we replaced it with hardware cloth.  You can read how to do this step in this post.

The two shades of green, the lighter shade interior, the hardware cloth and the original glass are telling a new story and I just love that!

Do you see why I said I need to keep this piece??  What’s a girl to do!  Guess I will be generous and offer it to you 🙂
